There are 8-9 different bear species, mostly native to North America. The bears in the films appear to be the Kodiak Bear, which is a subspecies of Brown Bear. Many are endangered due to poaching, thus, the Brown Bear and the American Black Bear are the only Bear species that are not threatened.
