When Kenai and his brothers, Denahi and Sitka, return from catching salmon, they tie their basket in a tree. However, due to Kenai's poor tying job, the basket falls open onto the ground. However, the brothers proceed to the village, where the tribe gathers for Kenai's totem ceremony.
Afterward, the tribe discovers that bears have made off with their basket. Kenai gets the blame for not tying up the basket properly, so he resolves to hunt down the bear and retrieve the basket.
Later, after Sitka's death, the tribe gathers at the village for his funeral. Kenai decides to hunt down the bear to avenge Sitka, and Denahi pursues him, hoping to stop him. Meanwhile, Tanana speaks to the Great Spirits, who are dancing overhead, and tells Sitka that his brothers need his guidance.
After Kenai transforms into a bear permanently, he returns to his village to place his pawprint on the wall of his ancestors.
